What are Warts?

Warts are viral infections of the skin cells (keratinocytes ) caused due to human papilloma virus (HPV). These are DNA viruses with more than 200 types identified, with different HPV infecting different sites of the body. These viruses attack the cells of layers of skin and lead to its proliferation, giving rise to the thick and hard appearance.

What are the different types of warts?

Different types of HPV are responsible for variants in warts.

Flat warts ( verruca plana ) are multiple in number and commonly seen on face, hands. Warts on soles are known as verruca plantaris and are usually present as thick mound of skin. Filiform warts are small, tall and have tiny finger like projections. Genital warts are seen in both the sexes.

What is the treatment?

The warts are removed with electrocautery and/ or by radio frequency technology.Other than this- cryotherapy, vaccines to treat against warts are also been made available.Side effects are minimal with mild redness and discomfort, which subside within 4-5 days.Multiple sessions based on the type or recurrence of wart may be needed.

What are other treatments?

Application of salicylic acid prescribed by the dermatologist, and the application of plant toxins ( podophyllotoxin) under the guidance of dermatologist after detailed discussion is also available.
